A Message from the Captain
Here are some summer safety tips from Captain Tito Jackson:
Summer is here and what better way to enjoy it than spending some time outdoors. Here are a few ways to make sure your summer is safe and healthy.
On hot days try to limit your outdoor activity. If you must be outside remember to drink plenty of water or electrolyte beverages such as Gatorade. To prevent heat exhaustion, wear light, loose fitting clothes and a hat in the sun. If you suspect that someone has heat exhaustion get him or her out of the sun and call 911. Remember, heat exhaustion can happen to anyone and is a medical emergency.
The summer is a great time to be outside. With longer days and warm nights, many people like to go for a walk or a bicycle ride. Here are some ways to stay safe:
If you are walking:
Cross at intersections only. The intersection is where the drivers expect to see you.
Never cross from in-between parked cars.
Before crossing look left, right, then left again. Always listen for oncoming traffic.
Make sure you can be seen at night. Wear white or light colored clothing when walking at night. Attach reflective materials to coats and shoes or wear reflective armbands.
Obey all traffic signs and signals.
Children should be discouraged from playing on driveways and sidewalks near the roadway.
If
you are bicycle riding:
Never Ride a bicycle without a helmet. Helmets save lives. New Jersey law states that anyone under the age of fourteen riding a bike, even as a passenger, must be wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet. It is recommended that all bicycle riders wear helmets.
Follow the rules of the road; obey all traffic signs and signals.
If you ride at night make sure you can be seen and that your bicycle has reflectors or a light system on it.
Watch for hazards, such as people exiting cars, sewer grates or potholes, etc.
Enjoy the summer and make it safe!
